The following guidelines are meant to be used in
conjunction with the training you are being given at the school. They are
designed as a reminder for the exercises you will have been doing during your
lessons.
The following manoeuvres assume that you are in the correct
road position on approach to the manoeuvre.
Left turn
- Well
before turning use rear observation to fully assess the
traffic situation (speed and position).
- Indicate
left
- Look
over the left shoulder (lifesaver)
- Move
to the left
- When
on a straight course use rear observation to confirm that the
manoeuvre can still be completed in safety.
- Look
over the left shoulder (lifesaver). The
object of the rear observation is to make sure that the turning can be made
in safety (e,g, cyclists). If the rider has any doubt their speed should be
low enough to stop.
- The
left turn should be made without swinging out either before or after the
turn. Remember to give way to
pedestrians were necessary.
- When
entering the new road move to the correct safe position
- Check
that the left direction indicator has cancelled and accelerate smoothly if
safe to do so.
Right Turn
- Well
before turning use rear observation to fully assess the
traffic situation (speed and position).
- Indicate
right
- Look
over the right shoulder (lifesaver). This look behind is to assess the
traffic situation and is made before the rider changes road position.
A gradual deviation towards the centre of the road should be made
with the final position just to the left of the centre line.
- When
on a straight course and in position use rear observation again to reassess the
traffic situation then adjust speed for the right turn.
- Before
committing yourself to the right turn look over your right shoulder
(lifesaver). The object of the rear observation is to make sure that the
turning can be made in safety. If
the rider has any doubt their speed should be low enough to stop.
- When
entering the new road move to the correct safe position
- Check
that the right direction indicator has cancelled and accelerate smoothly if
safe to do so.
Passing parked cars
- Look
behind to assess the traffic situation.
- Look
over your right shoulder (lifesaver) to assess the speed and position of the
traffic to make sure it is safe to start the procedure for passing.
- When
passing parked cars signal were necessary to help other road users.
- Move
out gradually but in plenty of time. Do
not make quick swerving changes in direction.
- Leave
adequate clearance between you and the car.
- After
passing look over your left shoulder (life saver) before moving to the correct safe position in the road
